France being France, most the shops are shut on Sundays – but the bakers are open in the morning and you can still fill up with Beer & Wine of course! There are a number of specialist outlets in Cherbourg open 7/7 including Majestic Wines (www.majesticinfrance.co.uk) and the Normandie Wine Warehouse (www.normandie-wine.com) who will also deliver to you boat if you ask nicely.
There is a massive choice of places to enjoy sublime food and drink at sensible prices all within a short stroll of the Marina, and the Sunday market at Octeville (Quartier des provinces) is just a short bus ride away.
There are also many attractions worth a visit including the amazing CITÉ DE LA MER which is highly recommended as is the FORT ROUL and the MUSÉE DE LA LIBÉRATION which between them offer a moving account of the darkest days of the Nazi occupation. Other museums include the MUSEUM LIAIS with it's fascinating collection of natural history, archaeological and ethnographical objects, the THOMAS HENRY ART MUSEUM – these three are open Sunday afternoon and also offer free entry.
Religious attractions include BASILIQUE DE LA TRINITÉ from the 14th and 15th centuries, the EGLISE NOTRE DAME which was erected in the 14th and throughout the 19th century and the CHAPELLE ST GERMAIN the oldest religious edifice in Cotentin, built on the relics of a paleochristian temple. We mustn't forget either the ABBAYE DU VŒU, which was founded in 1145 by Mathilde, daughter of our own King Henry 1st.
The are also several superb public gardens and the most unusual of all attractions, especially to us sailers, the replica of the VIKING VESSEL "DREKNOR" The original would have sailed off our shores more than a thousand years ago powered by 322 oars and 120m2 of sail. You can even go for a sail on her yourself
